Minneapolis, MINN. (November 1, 2018) Today, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced the issuance of multiple permits related to the proposed PolyMet NorthMet Mine near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota.

Sierra Club North Star Chapter Director Margaret Levin issued the following statement in response:

“We are deeply disappointed in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources decision to proceed with issuing permits including the permit to mine. Northern Minnesota’s iconic waterways – from Lake Superior to the Boundary Waters, and everything in between – are internationally significant resources that deserve better treatment from the people and agencies entrusted with their protection. The stakes are high: PolyMet’s proposed mine would threaten the health and safety of downstream communities, destroy thousands of acres of wetlands and habitat, and expose Minnesota taxpayers to massive financial risk. Tens of thousands of Minnesotans have participated in this process, and today’s action is a clear signal that their voices have not yet been fairly heard and considered. Regardless of today’s permitting decision, the Sierra Club remains fully committed to continuing the critical work of ensuring that our clean water and natural resources are protected and valued for generations to come.”
