The Montgomery County Sierra Club Zero Waste Committee has prepared a report on recommendations for achieving zero waste in the county.
The recommendations are:
- End waste incineration and adopt a zero waste hierarchy
- Consolidate our fragmented waste management system
- Further reduce plastic bag waste
- Encourage composting of food waste and organics
- Phase in unit pricing for trash collection
- Achieve higher rates of construction and demolition waste diversion
- Use the County’s purchasing power on sustainable products
- Expand opportunities for hard-to-recycle materials
- Provide more recycling education to residents
- Require producer responsibility for plastic waste
