New Zero Waste Recommendations

The Montgomery County Sierra Club Zero Waste Committee has prepared a report on recommendations for achieving zero waste in the county. 

The recommendations are:

  • End waste incineration and adopt a zero waste hierarchy
  • Consolidate our fragmented waste management system
  • Further reduce plastic bag waste
  • Encourage composting of food waste and organics
  • Phase in unit pricing for trash collection
  • Achieve higher rates of construction and demolition waste diversion
  • Use the County’s purchasing power on sustainable products
  • Expand opportunities for hard-to-recycle materials
  • Provide more recycling education to residents
  • Require producer responsibility for plastic waste
