Cahokia Mounds Outing

The Sierra Club is hosting an outing on September 12, 2015 at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. The event will start at the Cahokia Mounds Interpretative Center at 10:00 a.m. and will include viewing the 16-minute orientation film “City of the Sun," a two hour hike-tour on specific site trails, and a guided tour of the interpretative center. Participants will see the ancient canoe (1,000 years old Mississippian period), which is part of the new wetlands exhibit that opens August 15. The event will finish at 3:00 p.m. The outdoor hike will include interpretation of the local flora and fauna by Dr. Rich Keating, Sierra Club volunteer and retired professor of biological sciences at SIUE. Participants should bring bag lunches, bug spray, and sun block. The facility has vending machines for water and drinks. There is no charge but donations to Cahokia Mounds are welcome. Directions are available on the site website. The site address is 30 Ramey Street, Collinsville, IL.
