In May of 2023, the Supreme Court ruled on Sackett vs. EPA, redefining what wetlands are protected by the federal government. This decision threatens wetlands across the country, including in the Great Lakes Region, which has lost between 60 and 90% of its original wetlands.
"The most important thing now is for our local & state governments that have for decades counted on the federal government to protect these crucial areas to step up and put their own protections into place," says Sierra Club Illinois Director Jack Darin.
