Chicago, IL. -- Today, Chicagoans made it clear at the polls that they want an environmental justice champion as Mayor of Chicago by electing Brandon Johnson.
“Sierra Club proudly endorsed Brandon Johnson ahead of the run-off election and looks forward to working alongside him in City Hall for a safer, cleaner, and more equitable Chicago,” said Sierra Club Illinois Director Jack Darin. “Under Brandon Johnson’s leadership, Chicago can and will lead the way in protecting the communities most affected by pollution and mitigating climate disaster with bold solutions that decarbonize our homes and communities. Sierra Club looks forward to being a partner in achieving these critical goals.”
"As the third largest city in the nation, Chicago’s commitment to environmental justice, decarbonizing our electric sector, and ensuring reliable clean transportation provides a clear roadmap for the future of our communities and our planet,” said Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous. “Partnering with a diverse coalition of partners and allies across the city, Sierra Club Illinois emphatically advocated for Brandon Johnson's vision for Chicago, and will continue the work to make those policies a reality. Let’s get to work.”
Sierra Club congratulates our endorsed aldermanic candidates Lamont Robinson (Ward 4), Desmon Yancy (Ward 5), Nicole Lee (Ward 11), and Angela Clay (Ward 46) on their respective victories in the run-off election. Of the 20 aldermanic candidates endorsed by Sierra Club throughout this election cycle, 15 of them will be heading to City Hall to tackle some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time.
“We congratulate Representative Lamont Robinson, Desmon Yancy, Alder Nicole Lee, and Angela Clay on their victories in today’s run-off election,” said Sierra Club Chicago Political Chair David Teeghman. “Sierra Club Chicago members proudly supported these environmental champions by hosting more than 30 phonebanks and canvassing events leading up to the run-off, and are looking forward to working with them to ensure all Chicagoans have access to clean water, clean air, and equitable communities. The time is now to make Chicago a leader in climate justice.”
