"Waukegan says goodbye to a coal plant but must now content with its industrial waste" via WBEZ

Waukegan Generating Station, a power plant that has operated for a century on the shores of Lake Michigan, recently shut down its coal-fired units. However, two ponds of coal ash, a byproduct of burning coal that can take the form of fine particles or sludge, are still there.

“The process that is currently moving forward is incomplete and will not address the groundwater contamination that’s been happening on the lakefront,” said Christine Nannicelli.
