The Idaho Chapter Sierra Club invites you to join our Run for the Climate fundraiser! It will be held October 29th through November 8th. To register, please LINK NEEDED.
Our goal with this fundraiser is to raise awareness for access to the Treasure Valley’s extensive opportunity to build an urban pathway system for use as a future transportation corridor for pedestrians and cyclists. We would like to see an interconnected pathway system that spans every neighborhood and community in the Treasure Valley. This multi-use pathway plan would utilize canals to connect our communities, provide transportation options for all, and bring open space to every neighborhood. These pathways would safely connect every resident to outdoor recreation, parks, schools, public transit, and other community assets.
Being connected as a community means greater opportunity to learn from each other and help each other thrive. With interconnected communities, individuals are able to enjoy a wider, richer network of resources and support. Want to know more about this vision? You can read more here.
In addition, 10% of proceeds will go to the Canals Connect Community Coalition to directly help this growing partnership continue to advocate for Treasure Valley-wide pathway network, to help spur furthering active transportation options for all communities.
How can urban pathways help mitigate the climate crisis and environmental harm?
It is estimated that nearly 12 to 20% of carbon emissions and other airborne pollutants can be mitigated by daily commuters choosing to move out of their cars and into public transit and active transportation options, like walking, e-scooters, bicycles and more. This can’t happen without our neighborhoods having connected, safe routes for residents to move from their home to community spaces, businesses or public transit stops. Having an integrated pathway system can do so much for our communities even if mitigating the climate crisis isn’t important to you, like reducing traffic congestion, improving our air quality and public health, saving tax dollars and saving open space for all.
