Everglades

Future River of Grass Skyway

Give your time to help get the the Everglades Skyway built.

The Everglades (aka The River of Grass) is dependent on clean water slowly moving south to Florida Bay. One hundred years ago, the focus was on connecting southwest and southeast Florida and the Tamiami Trail was built without fully understanding the importance of waters slow but steady pace. Eventually, the health of the Everglades ecosystem became a concern for the flora and fauna that call the Everglades their home, with significant losses of wading bird populations such as Egrets, Herons, Storks and Ibis. Planning began in 1992 to allow for the incremental increase in water flow with a series of raised roadways in the Northeast Shark River Slough. By 2013, the first mile of the Everglades Skyway was opened and many environmental groups including the Sierra Club's Jonathan Ullman celebrated this victory. Since then, a 2.6 mile span was finished, and the work continues on three more miles to help restore this wonderful ecosystem.
