June 18, 2018: The Sierra Club and Friends of the Chicago River have provided notice to the Chicago Trump International Hotel and Tower that they will sue over its ongoing violation of the Clean Water Act. Among other violations, Trump Tower has been illegally operating a cooling water intake structure that pulls water from the Chicago River, likely trapping and killing fish and other wildlife. Despite federal and state requirements that newly constructed facilities like the Trump Tower study how to minimize damage to aquatic life from their water intake structures and implement protective measures, Trump Tower has failed to do so over the past four years.
