En la frontera con México, hemos visto algunos de los efectos más devastadores de la administración Trump. Ha completado más de 415 millas de nuevas barreras y refuerzos, usando fondos robados a las Fuerzas Armadas y destruyendo comunidades, hábitat y parajes silvestres.
Trump anuló protecciones culturales y ambientales para construir su muro y ha permitido la destrucción de terrenos tribales además de cementerios sagrados de la Nación Tohono O’odham. Para construir el muro, su administración usó una parte obsoleta de la Ley Real ID para saltarse leyes como la de Agua Limpia, la de Política Ambiental Nacional, la de Aire Limpio, la de Especies en Peligro, y la de Protección de Tumbas y Repatriación de Indígenas Americanos, la cual protege la herencia cultural de las tribus. Este es el mayor abuso desde que se aprobó la Ley Real ID.
Esta anulación de leyes ambientales y de salud pone en peligro el sustento de los residentes de la frontera y los hace aún más vulnerables a injusticias ambientales. La agenda promilitarización y antiinmigrante de la administración Trump inflige un enorme daño a las comunidades que viven en armonía con nuestros vecinos del sur. En nombre de los derechos humanos y ambientales, la administración Biden tiene que reparar el daño y restaurar los terrenos fronterizos.
El muro no es solo un símbolo de las políticas racistas de Trump. También inflige un daño irreparable al medio ambiente. La construcción de nuevas barreras ya ha destrozado algunos de los parajes más biológicamente diversos de Norteamérica. Ese muro pone aún en más peligro a 100 especies vulnerables. Ya nos encontramos en una extinción masiva en el planeta Tierra, la primera causada por el ser humano. Construir muros que destruyen hábitat es lo opuesto a lo que deberíamos estar haciendo para evitar más devastación.
Las barreras fronterizas bloquean la migración de la vida silvestre, causa inundaciones y daños a los terrenos públicos —incluyendo refugios y áreas silvestres, y bosques nacionales. En Arizona hemos presenciado el empeoramiento de las inundaciones y las muertes de inmigrantes en su intento por cruzar la frontera. Ya estamos viendo cómo barreras construidas bajo Trump están colapsando. Estas barreras artificiales en medio de parajes y ecosistemas que en su día fueron silvestres significan un verdadero peligro para las comunidades fronterizas.
Instamos al Presidente-Electo Biden a cumplir con su promesa de acabar con los contratos de construcción del muro y suspender con las anulaciones de protecciones ambientales y culturales de Trump. Biden tiene que ordenar al Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejército y al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional cancelar todos los contratos y anulaciones emitidos desde 2005. Solo se trata de deshacer las dañinas decisiones de Trump y debe ser una prioridad absoluta.
La administración Biden tiene que trabajar con estos grupos migratorios y fronterizos para asegurarse de que no se dañen más a estas vibrantes comunidades culturalmente ricas. Esto requerirá que la administración Biden vaya aún más allá. Tiene que derribar las barreras existentes que han diezmado y continúan dañando hábitat, personas y terrenos públicos. El Programa de Terrenos Fronterizos del Sierra Club quiere soluciones verdaderas a estos retos en el Suroeste. La administración Biden tiene que abordar una reforma migratoria justa y equitativa con una vía a la ciudadanía que solucione las causas fundamentales de los complejos problemas fronterizos. The Wall Must Fall: Biden should take urgent action to restore borderlands

Under the Trump administration, we have seen some of the most devastating effects on the US-Mexico borderlands. Trump completed more than 415 miles of new walls and replacement barriers— using stolen funds from the military and destroying communities, habitat and wildlands in the process.
Trump waived cultural and environmental protections to build his wall, allowing the destruction of Tribal lands as well as sacred burial grounds of the Tohono O’odham Nation. His administration used an outdated piece of the Real ID Act to neglect laws like the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act meant to protect Indigenous cultural sites to build the wall. That's the most of any presidential administration since the Real ID Act became law.
The waiving of bedrock environmental and health laws for construction puts the livelihoods of Americans living on the border at risk and puts these communities in even further jeopardy of environmental injustices. The Trump administration's pro-militarization, anti-immigrant agenda is one that takes an enormous toll on communities who live in harmony with our southern neighbors. For the sake of our environment and human rights—the Biden administration must make it a priority to undo the damage and restore the borderlands.
The border wall is not just a symbol of Trump's racist policies— it also inflicts irreversible harm on the environment. The construction of the new border wall has already ripped through some of the most biologically diverse desert lands in North America. This wall puts nearly 100 endangered species at increased risk. We are currently in a worsening mass extinction on planet Earth— the first in planet history caused by people. Building walls that destroy habitat is the opposite of what we should be doing to prevent more devastation.
Border barriers block wildlife migration, cause flooding and damage our lands— including wildlife refuges, wilderness areas, and national forests. In Arizona, we have witnessed walls worsen flooding and make the humanitarian crisis of deaths on the border much worse. Already, walls built under Trump are crumbling and toppling over. These unnatural barriers in the middle of once-wildlands and ecosystems present a real danger to the communities along the border.
We are calling on President-elect Biden to uphold his promise to pull wall construction contracts and to rescind Trump’s waivers of cultural and environmental safeguards. Biden must instruct the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Homeland Security to cancel all border wall contracts and rescind all waivers of law issued since 2005 for border wall construction. Both of these are a matter of pulling the plug on the damaging decisions made by Trump, and should be day one priorities.
The Biden administration must work with these frontline immigrant and borderland groups to ensure that no further harm comes to these culturally rich and vibrant communities. That will require the Biden administration to go a step further; they must tear down the existing barriers that have already decimated and continue to harm habitat, people and public lands. Sierra Club Borderlands advocates want real solutions to the challenges in the Southwest. The Biden administration must tackle just and fair immigration reform with a path to full citizenship, that addresses the root causes of complex border problems. These first steps should be a priority in the first 100 days of the Biden Presidency.
