Los residentes de Guayama, sede de la única planta a carbón en Puerto Rico desde 2002, han recibido diagnósticos de cáncer y otras enfermedades cardiacas y respiratorias que se teme están relacionadas con la exposición a cenizas de carbón. La empresa desechaba cenizas de carbón en vertederos subterráneos y se han descubierto rastros tóxicos de arsénico, cromo, selenio y molibdeno en las aguas subterráneas de Guayama y pueblos cercanos. A lo largo de los años, esta central eléctrica también ha acumulado más de 400,000 toneladas de cenizas de carbón que están a la intemperie, sin nada que proteja el aire, el suelo y los acuíferos de posible contaminación.
En el pueblo adyacente de Salinas, la vida de Nelson Santos cambió en el instante que le diagnosticaron cáncer a su esposa y le dijeron que sus tratamientos tenían que llevarse a cabo en Pennsylvania. Santos es uno de los líderes de IDEBAJO, Iniciativa de Eco Desarrollo de Bahía de Jobos, una organización que lucha por ofrecer protección equitativa a comunidades marginadas de la zona. Los esfuerzos colaborativos de Sierra Club con IDEBAJO garantizaron el apoyo de abogados, científicos y grupos de presión, así como nuestra amplia experiencia de organización comunitaria, a fin de que sus voces fueran escuchadas.
Esta acción colaborativa pudo frenar el desecho subterráneo de cenizas tóxicas por parte de la central eléctrica. Otro éxito legal fue rechazar la renovación del contrato de la planta para continuar operando después de 2028.

Meet Nelson Santos, a member of the Sierra Club in Puerto Rico
Residents of Guayama, the site of the only coal plant in Puerto Rico since 2002, have been diagnosed with cancer and other cardiac and respiratory diseases that have been feared to be related to exposure to coal ash. The company disposed of coal ash in underground landfills and toxic traces of arsenic, chromium, selenium and molybdenum have been discovered in the groundwater of Guayama and nearby towns. Over the years, this power plant has accumulated more than 400,000 tons of coal ash that is out in the open, with nothing to protect the air, soil and aquifers of possible contamination.
In the adjacent town of Salinas, Nelson Santos's life changed the instant his wife was diagnosed with cancer and was told that his treatments had to be carried out in Pennsylvania. Santos is one of the leaders of IDEBAJO, Iniciativa de Eco Desarrollo de Bahía de Jobos, an organization that fights for the preservation of the environment and it’s natural resources. The collaborative efforts of Sierra Club with IDEBAJO guaranteed the support of lawyers, scientists and lobbyists, as well as our extensive experience of community organization, so that their voices would be heard.
This collaborative effort is fighting to curb the underground waste of toxic ash from the power plant. One of the most recent legal success was to reject the contract renewal of the plant to continue operating after 2028.
