Cuatro años de Donald Trump en la Casa Blanca han dejado al país enfermo, empobrecido, exhausto, en medio de enormes crisis agravadas por la inusitada incompetencia y corrupción de su gobierno.
COVID-19 ya se ha cobrado cerca de 220.000 vidas de amigos y familiares e infectado a más de 8 millones de personas. Nuestra comunidad está pagando desproporcionadamente el impacto de la pandemia, con más de 44.500 muertes. Más de 90,000 latinos, negros e indígenas han fallecido a causa de la enfermedad, el 43% del total, pese a que estas comunidades conforman solo el 31% de la población del país.
Estos números desgarradores se deben en gran parte a la negligencia de la administración Trump, la cual desmanteló sistemáticamente el sistema que contuvo dos pandemias durante la administración Obama. En los cruciales tres primeros meses de la pandemia, Trump nos mintió, asegurando que estaba bajo control o que desaparecería como un “milagro”. En conversaciones grabadas con el periodista Bob Woodward publicadas en septiembre, Trump reconoció que pese a conocer perfectamente la letalidad del virus desde el principio, intencionalmente restó su gravedad mientras el saldo mortal crecía exponencialmente. Una efectiva reacción contra la pandemia podría haber evitado la muerte entre 130.000 y 210.000 personas, según un reciente estudio de Columbia University.
Estos siete devastadores meses de pandemia han demolido la economía, arrastrándola a niveles de la Gran Depresión. Desde mediados de marzo a finales de junio, casi 50 millones de estadounidenses solicitaron seguro de desempleo, y la comunidad que más sufrió esta pérdida fue la nuestra. Pese a que hasta la mitad de esos empleos se ha recuperado para la comunidad blanca, ese no es el caso para nosotros. La tasa oficial de paro es del 7,9%. Pero si consideramos desempleada a una persona que no puede encontrar un trabajo con un salario sustentable, entonces esa cifra se dispara a un monstruoso 26,1%. Mientras la administración Trump y sus aliados en el Senado siguen lavándose las manos en la aprobación de un nuevo paquete de alivio económico, 40 millones de personas están en grave peligro de ser desahuciadas.
Pocas imágenes describen la crueldad y el caos inherente de la administración Trump como el llanto aterrado de la niña inmigrante al ver el arresto de su madre en la frontera. Quizá nunca se sabrá el número de niños que la administración ha separado de sus padres solicitantes de asilo. Según Amnistía Internacional, han sido más de 6.000 unidades familiares. Una investigación de Associated Press, sin embargo, elevó el número a casi 70.000 niños. En cualquier caso, miles de ellos fueron enjaulados en horribles condiciones sanitarias y la inmensa mayoría ha sufrido daños psicológicos permanentes. Una reciente investigación interna reveló que la política oficial del Departamento de Justicia expresaba la urgencia de “separar a los niños”, “sin importar la edad”.
Otro monumental fracaso de la presidencia de Trump es su muro fronterizo. Este monumento al racismo ha despilfarrado unos $18.500 millones —de los cuales $13.300 millones Trump los usurpó ilegalmente del presupuesto del Pentágono— ha dinamitado irremplazables parajes naturales, destruido tumbas y lugares sagrados de varias tribus e interrumpido las migraciones de especies en peligro de extinción.
Trump promete cuatro años más de lo mismo. Su plan para combatir COVID-19 es dejar que la pandemia siga su curso, a un costo estimado de hasta 6 millones de vidas, y continuará ignorando la crisis climática mientras la ONU advierte que la inacción gubernamental arriesga convertir el mundo en un “infierno inhabitable”.

Four years of Donald Trump in the White House have left the country sick, impoverished, and exhausted, and in the midst of enormous crises aggravated by his administration’s unprecedented incompetency and corruption.
COVID-19 has already taken close to 220,000 of our friends and family members and infected more than 8 million Americans. My Latino community has paid a disproportionate price in this pandemic, with more than 44,500 deaths. More than 90,000 Latinos, Blacks and Native Americans have died of this disease, 43 percent of the total, even though these communities make up only 31 percent of the US population.
These heartbreaking numbers are due in large part to the negligence of the Trump administration, which systematically dismantled the defense system that stopped two pandemics during the Obama administration. Throughout the crucial first three months of the pandemic, Trump lied to us, downplaying its severity, reassuring the country that it was under control or that it would disappear “like a miracle.” In recorded conversations with journalist Bob Woodward published in September, Trump acknowledged that even though he knew full well about the lethality of the virus from the very beginning, he intentionally brushed it aside while the death toll increased exponentially. An effective reaction to fight the pandemic could have saved anywhere between 130,000 and 220,000 lives, according to a recent Columbia University study.
These almost eight pandemic months have demolished the national economy down to Great Depression levels. From mid-March to late June, almost 50 million Americans applied for unemployment insurance, and the community that suffered the most was mine. Regardless of the fact that half of those jobs have been recovered for white workers, for us Latinos that has not been the case. The official jobless rate is 7.9 percent. Yet if we considered an unemployed person as someone who unsuccessfully looks for a job that pays a living wage, then that number skyrockets to a monstrous 26.1 percent. While the administration and its allies in the Senate wash their hands in the passing of a new economic relief package, 40 million Americans are at grave risk of being evicted.
Yet, few images manage to describe the Trump administration’s inherent chaos and cruelty like the terrified cry of that little girl while her immigrant mother was being detained at the border. We don’t know, and perhaps never will, how many children were ripped from the arms of their asylum-seeking parents. According to Amnesty International, more than 6,000 family units have been separated. An investigation by the Associated Press, however, found that almost 70,000 children were separated. In any instance, thousands of them, as young as three, were put in cages in horrible sanitary conditions, and a great majority of them have suffered irreversible psychological damage. A recent internal investigation confirmed that the Department of Justice’s official policy was to “separate the children” … “no matter how young they are.”
Another monumental failure of the Trump presidency is his border wall. This symbol of racism has wasted some $18.5 billion—$13.3 billion of which Trump illegally usurped from the Pentagon’s budget—has desecrated burial and sacred sites of local tribes, dynamited irreplaceable landscapes, and interrupted the migrations of countless endangered species.
Trump is promising four more years of the same. His plan to fight the pandemic consists of letting the virus to run its course, at an estimated cost of up to 6 million lives, and he will continue ignoring the climate crisis while the UN warns us that governmental inaction risks turning wide areas of the world into an “inhabitable hell.”
