Bill Meyer At Large 2015 Election

Climate Change is the defining issue of our time. I made this argument as we organized the Indigenous peoples camp for “Towards the Earth Summit” in Rio 1994.

Now we are heading towards the Paris Climate Talks and it is truly do or die for the climate. The current political stalemate must be broken and immediate large scale action must be taken to move our economy towards 100% clean renewable energy. Not Nuclear, not Coal or Oil, Not Natural Gas, and not tomorrow!

I serve as the Atlantic Chapter Conservation Chair and the Lower Hudson Group Chair where we help to define solutions to the Climate Crisis. Experience shows that mass mobilization and coalition building are working. Over 200,000 coalition comments were delivered to the Governor and together with actions across the state we accomplished the impossible by banning fracking in New York. The Sierra Club was a catalyst in building effective coalitions towards this goal and we continue to push back against fossil fuel infrastructure.

We need nothing less than an energy revolution to solve the climate crisis. For this we need to include faith based groups, labor, health and science organizations, diverse communities, youth, and environmental groups. The economics are in our favor and mass mobilizations can give political leaders the strength they need to recall how democracy works.

We are in a unique moment where the locavore movement, organic gardening, makers fairs, and civic engagement are popular. Our states parks and open space areas are bursting with outdoor enthusiasts. These trends fit our traditional Sierra Club values. I will work to catalyze these trends in New York through new outings programs and events that engage future members and activate them towards being the solution to climate change we need.
