Proposed Upcoming Outings for the Sierra Club Southwest Group
Spring and Summer 2023
Hello Fellow Hikers! Susan Russo here- your Outings Leader for the SW Group. I am starting to plan our outings for 2023. I'm hoping many folks will join me on the trails. We will repeat many popular outings from 2021 and 2022. Our first hike will be Saturday, June 3rd in LaPlata Canyon. Travis Ward will co-lead this secret, unpublished trail in the canyon that is not very steep and trail isn't very rocky (like many of the trails in LaPlata Canyon). We will meet in parking lot behind Kennebec's Restaurant at 9am and Travis will lead us to the private trailhead.
We will also hike early in season in Sand Canyon I Cortez, where hiking season starts early due to a much warmer micro-climate than Durango.
Other hikes will include the Junction Creek Trail that connects to the Colorado Trail and The Hoffhein Connection Trail that also connects to Colorado Trail- but is shorter than Jn Creek Trail. In Jul we will do the Ramparts Trail in Echo Basin in Mancos and a hike (in shade) in Mesa Verde National Park. Other hikes will be along Cascade Creek in Mancos, and along Hermosa Creek north of Durango. Paul Wilson our very own Treasurer and Sierra Club Member Extraordinare and expert Fly-Fisherman, will co-lead an outing that includes the equipment and training for fly-fishing, and to those who wish to purchase a fishing license, fly- fishing!!
Exact dates will be published in the Spring and sent to Members via email. I will also post them at local libraries in Mancos, Cortez, Durango, Pagosa Springs and Ignacio.
Hope to see you on the Trails!
Susan Russo, Outings Leader SW Group
