Sierra Club California Responds to Governor Newsom’s State of the State Address
SACRAMENTO— Governor Gavin Newsom delivered his fourth State of the State address on Tuesday and spoke briefly about the need for California to fight big polluters. Notably, his speech singled out the fossil fuel industry in particular.
In response, Brandon Dawson, Director of Sierra Club California, issued the following statement:
“The governor is correct in noting that California needs to keep fossil fuels in the ground. Doing so would benefit both California communities and our ecosystems. But more powerful than words is action. Newsom can and must use his authority to halt new oil and gas permits, and reject calls from legislators to expand oil production. He also needs to ensure that the state embraces clean energy resources such as rooftop solar, and work with the legislature to pass meaningful legislation that will accelerate climate action.
California is well past the time for words. We need concrete action. We’ll be closely watching Newsom’s approach this legislative session and will work with our environmental justice partners to push him to support meaningful legislation.”
