December 21 2022
We’re only days away from 2023, which means it’s everyone’s favorite time of the year: NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS.
I love resolutions, especially if I’m not the one forced to keep them. Here’s a short list of some resolutions I strongly suggest our elected officials and regulators consider.
Governor Gavin Newsom: Resolve to be even better on the environment in your second term. 2022 was a good year for you - compared to the earlier years - don’t stop the progress.
The Department of Water Resources: As Sierra Club California and other groups have said time and time again, stop pursuing the environmentally destructive Delta Conveyance Project (the Delta Tunnel).. There are so many better local solutions you pursue to help ensure Californians have a safe and sustainable water supply.
Newly elected legislators: I have two: 1) Don't be afraid to say no. Voting against environmentally harmful bills in committees or on the floor can be scary, but being an environmental champion means standing against polluting interests. 2) Don't be afraid to ask for help. Sierra Club California members and staff are always just a call, text or email away for all your environmental questions and concerns!
The California Air Resources Board: Remember to listen to concerned Californians. Prioritize the voices of frontline communities and focus on the retirement of combustion technologies as you implement the Scoping Plan.
The methane gas industry: Stop greenwashing your pollution. There is no room for “near-zero” combustion technologies or dirty, methane-derived hydrogen in the state’s transition to a zero-emission future. Take responsibility now, and help the state shift to renewable, sustainable energy sources.
The California Energy Commission: Spend wisely. The governor and legislature entrusted you with billions of dollars to advance a reliable clean energy future. Use it to promote zero-emission resources, energy efficiency, and demand response. Avoid the temptation to continue propping up harmful technologies like diesel backup generators, methane gas plants, and infamously antiquated nuclear power plants.
The California Natural Resources Agency: Conserve and protect our treasured natural resources. Move forward with implementation of the Governor’s bold 30x30 executive order.
Our members and supporters: Double down on your activism. We were tremendously impressed by your support in 2022, but the fight to protect the environment and our communities is growing more important by the day. You’re crucial to ensuring we win those vital battles.
Hope you have a restful holiday break, and see you in 2023!
Sincerely,
Brandon Dawson
