AmPark Neighborhood School
AmPark Neighborhood School is a Pre K-5 school with approximately 300 students, located within the Amalgated Park Reservoir Cooperative Housing community in the northwest Bronx. The residents of this community (in existence since 1927) were the co-authors of our proposal to establish this unique learning environment. AmPark classrooms reflect diversity: ethnically, socially, and developmentally. Students and teachers are provided with opportunities to work collaboratively. Our classrooms are designed to provide a variety of opportunities for learning and project-based learning is part of our curriculum. For example, our 2nd graders engage in a bird study that includes reading, writing, science and art. The Audobon Society visits our school and leads bird-watching tours. Such collaborations create the perfect opportunity for NYC ICO to deepen students' engagement with the natural world around them, and gain experience in nature outside of the city.

Flushing International High School
240 E 172nd Street, Bronx, NY
The Flushing International High School, founded in 2004, serves recent immigrants to the United States who are new learners of English. The goal of Flushing International is to help each student learn to read, write and communicate clearly in English while maintaining their native language. Our students will learn to use their minds well to think about real-world issues. They will use what they learn to become successful in school as well as in the workplace, and they will learn to speak up for themselves and for their community. Flushing International believes that school members’ native languages, cultures, and families are a resource for the student, the school, and society. Our school also understands that each student has different needs and talents and achieves at different rates. Therefore, we must give our students many different opportunities to demonstrate what they know and can do. Finally, as a school we know that language learning is enhanced by experiences both in and out of the school building.
