2/16/24: This is the first trip we have executed with PS 100 where we took 10 students from grades 4 and 5 to ice skate and hike around the lake. It was everyone's first-time ice skating except for one. Andrew and I were teaching them how to keep their balance and giving them advice. They were holding on to the rails and they were trying their best to learn. After 30 minutes some learned and some were still trying to get it down. We had one Catrock leader and a teacher outside the ice rank the whole time to keep an eye on the students. Then when the section was over we went for a lunch break. They were able to enjoy the Carousel after the students finished eating their lunch. It was a surprise and we wanted them to have fun and enjoy the day; they even wanted to go a second time. Afterward, we went hiking around the lake. We had a head trail talk the students listened and learned about Trail marks and Leave No Trace. Before we went back to the school, we had everyone gathered in a circle to hear their highlight and lows. We have so many students say their high was being able to ice skate and a few said hiking around the lake. The majority say that the only low is the cold weather and falling on the ice rank. They all had a great time and no one got hurt from the trip.
