On April 23rd, PS 159 explorers celebrated Earth Day at the New York Botanical Gardens! During the opening circle, students created a little scavenger hunt for the group of items they wanted to find: tulips, cherry blossums, a waterfall, roses. Then the students became the guides- using the map to find all of the items! We ate lunch overlooking a beautiful waterfall, while unfortunately discussing all the negative impacts of plastic, as we saw so many plastic water bottles next to the waterfall in the Bronx River. We went through the Children's Garden, where we participated in many activities: learned about the vision of bees, created a reusable bag, and learned about the difference between trash, recycling and compost. Best of all, we learned that NYBG now has a Bronx Residents Program- so all Bronx residents can access the grounds of the garden for free any day! Students will be encouraging their families to go and explore the Garden with them!
