June 2-3, 2022: The overnight hiking trip at AMC Harriman with the 5th graders of PS 159 was a really smooth trip. Of the 11 students in attendance, each brought enthusiasm and eagerness to jump into the outdoors and learn about camping. Even though this was the first time camping for the students they picked up things quickly such as, pitching a tent, cooking outdoors, backpack fitment, and reading a trail. Some of the highlights of the trip was getting to know each student personally and gauging their opinions on camping, which were all positive. Hiking in the rain was an overall crowd favorite because as one student put it, "it was a magical experience… I felt like I was in a movie". The PS 159 staff were all wonderful and very supportive with their students and distributed them tasks to do throughout the trip. The Harriman staff were especially accommodating in helping us source some materials for cooking and extra gear for our team. Their facility was clean and practical, and some of the staff came out to talk to the students about the campground. I know this experience changed a lot of the students' lives and this will be the first of many camping trips for them.
