March 21, 2015—Ward Pound Ridge, NY
Upon arriving at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, the snow was covering everything from the treetops to the ground. The reservation has a museum and the staff members are able to make maple syrup. It was very interesting to see how the maple sap was turned into maple syrup by boiling the water out of the sap. In the museum there were many animals and fun facts about nature and the reservation, which created an interactive atmosphere for all.
After being shown the example scavenger hunt, we broke up into groups and began to venture the adventure of creating a scavenger hunt for the opposite group. The idea was to begin from the end and finish at the beginning to setup the scavenger hunt. A group of four students and I set out on a hike using a map and a compass, enabled us to be able to make our way around the reservation and set clues for the opposing group. We hiked through the snow, crossed streams, and even saw some deer tracks. On the map, the stonewalls that we were following were depicted as dotted lines. This would require the opposing team to utilize the map in order to follow the clues.
As we came back to the museum, a maple testing of different food items were set out on display, which everyone enjoyed. After lunch the teams gave the respective opposing team the first clue to begin the scavenger hunt created. As we made our way the opposing teams scavenger hunt, we came across some very impressive snowmen. We also got to see what a shelter looks like. We also had to rely heavily on our compass in order to get to the last clue so we could find the prize.
After the scavenger hunts were completed by both teams, we met and discussed what we all enjoyed the most. One young lady said that she enjoyed making her first snowman. Others said they enjoyed working collectively as a team in order to complete the scavenger hunt. Although there was snow on the ground the sun was still shinning and everyone was in good spirits. It was a great day.
