On January 18, 2014, 10 students (age 10-11) and 5 excited volunteers hiked through the northern end of Central Park, led by Tom Perlman, on a trail that felt like pure nature – not at all in the city….arriving at the Museum of the City of New York (a little wet from slushy snow). At the museum, we looked at the Hurricane Sandy exhibit, led by Victoria Foster, who asked each child to find his or her favorite photo and a fact they did not previously know – then we went around to learn from each kid. During lunch, Helen Rosenberg discovered a cool art project so we did that next. Each child got a clipboard (from Carly! A museum volunteer) to draw pictures from the “Gilded Age” exhibit. From the drawings, they each made a fan full of feathers and sequins. Then we made our way to the Ice Rink – first people on the ice – it was great to have space while everyone got steady on their first steps of skating. We got a SURPRISE volunteer – Krista – who was there skating with a friend and she worked with every kid to teach them how to skate. She ALSO taught the volunteers how to TEACH the kids to skate so we were all better able to get them going...looks like we found a new volunteer. Aviv Golani, a star skater himself, also led the way in helping the kids have balancing breakthroughs! It was a great afternoon and the kids LOVED it and everyone was doing really well on skates by the end of the day. Kyron even made a new friend who taught several of the boys some new moves. THANK YOU to all the volunteers – NEW and VETERAN. The kids are so lucky to have your attention!
