Deadly floods are impacting communities in Kentucky. Over the past week, floodwaters have destroyed roads and bridges, isolating entire towns and forcing thousands to evacuate. At the time of writing, least 37 people have already lost their lives. We are all feeling "the fog of war" as we continue to deal with high floodwaters and start to come to terms with the devastation.
When disaster strikes, our Sierra Club community has pulled together time and again to help people in need of relief. I am so grateful to those who have contributed to the Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund, which is working on the ground to help affected communities. These contributions will help people get back on their feet after the floods.
In the midst of this disaster, the Sierra Club pledges to keep working to prevent future climate chaos while also showing up in support of our friends, neighbors and partners feeling the direct impacts of climate change. Climate change is making extreme weather events, like what we are seeing in Kentucky, more frequent and more devastating. We must do all we can to address the climate and biodiversity crises and secure the futures of our lands, wildlife, and communities.
