Climate Action Inspires Team Sierra to Raise Over $50,000

According to NASA, 2020 tied with 2016 as the hottest year ever on record. We’re in a climate crisis, and the reality of our situation can feel daunting. But what gives me hope are the people in our community who are eager to take action to end the climate crisis.

Team Sierra, the Sierra Club’s community fundraising program, launched a 1.5 Challenge in January. We challenged our supporters to log 1.5 miles or a complete a 15-minute workout every day for five weeks to raise money for the Sierra Club’s work to stop our planet from warming more than 1.5˚C (2.7˚ F) over preindustrial levels and avert the most devastating effects of the climate crisis.

1,034 people completed the challenge, raising $52,168 and logging 167,908 minutes of activity.

Here’s a glimpse into the 1.5 Challenge:

The Park family was motivated, logging the most minutes of any group!

John raised $1,661.37 and said, “The 1.5˚C target is so important to me, and I believe in the power of Sierra Club to catalyze ambitious climate action, like through this 1.5 challenge!”

Mary made rice bags and herbal sachets for everyone who donated to her fundraiser.

The snow didn’t stop Erin! She logged 1,440 minutes of walking and hiking in central New York.

2021 is a crucial year for us to come together for the future health of our planet and generations to come. Grassroots fundraising is one of the ways we’re able to fund important  initiatives that will have a huge impact on the climate crisis, like retiring coal plants and transitioning to clean energy.
