About Us

Purpose
The Sierra Club Wildland Urban Wildfire Committee was formed to address land-use planning and other issues related to the increasing intensity and frequency of wildfires in the wildland-urban interface/intermix (WUI).

Mission Statement
Our mission is to assess the risks associated with building in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZs) and influence policies to reduce those dangers while protecting the environment through education, organizing, and policy change.

Goals
The committee will raise awareness through research, education, outreach, and presentations. The committee will offer training of Sierra Club members, decision-makers, and the general public through dissemination of scientifically grounded, peer-reviewed, evidence-based information about WUI wildfires in VHFHSZs, and the environmental costs of building in the WUI, including the impacts of climate change on wildfires.

Organizing
The committee will join in solidarity with other relevant environmental groups whose positions are consistent with national Sierra Club policies to comment and appear at hearings where WUI issues are reviewed. We recognize that various chapter committees such as the Angeles Chapter Forest Committee deal with wildfire and other related issues on public lands.

Political Activism
Committee members will comment at public hearings and advocate for policy, legislation, and regulations that mitigate the impacts of wildfire danger in the WUI on the environment and people.
