by Lubna Debbini, Vice Chair of OC WTC

Are you interested in expanding your experience with hiking and nature? Do you want to start backpacking but aren't sure if it's right for you or where to get started? Then, consider signing up for the Wilderness Travel Course. The Orange County class meets on Tuesday nights from 7:30-9:45 PM, from January to March, and we cover a variety of topics including:

  • Gear and clothing selection
  • Ten essentials
  • Amassing your backpacking kt
  • Topographic map and compass navigation
  • Nutrition, hydration, and cooking outside
  • First Aid, weather, and wilderness dangers
  • Trip planning and obtaining permits
WTC Group Backpacking

The course includes four outings and the opportunity to go on guided backpacking trips throughout the summer. You'll learn rock scrambling skills, snow travel skills, and will confront your own comfort crisis by camping in snow for two nights.

Not only will you obtain valuable skills and potentially discover a whole new world, but you'll also connect with a vibrant and active community who are certain to become part of your lasting friendship network.

Orange County WTC regularly hosts a book club; we have a used gear sale, regular hikes, and recently saw about 40 alumni at a bonfire on the beach. Our potlucks are not to be missed!

Registration for 2025 opens in September, and space is limited. In recent years, Orange County has filled up faster than other areas, so make sure to secure your spot early. Visit: www.wildernesstravelcourse.org for more details and registration info.
