February 2017 Meeting Minutes
Meeting was called to order at just after 6:30p by Cahaba Group Chair Adam Johnston. We went around the room and everyone present introduced themselves. All total we had sixteen in attendance for the meeting. Six Cahaba ExCom members present.
- Minutes from December 2016 Meeting Lucina made a motion to accept the minutes from the December meeting as shared online with the ExCom members. Roe seconded the motion.
- Treasurer’s Report Lucina gave the treasurer’s report which was also shared online with the ExCom members. We currently have $6291.49 in our account and are expecting an allocation for 2017 from National of $715.12 in the coming days. We spent $505.78 on the January social - $300 for the band and $205.78 on swag from the Sierra Club website to give out as door prizes at the event. Old Business The January New Year social was described by most present to be a success - there were around 120 people at Cahaba Brewing that evening and around a dozen different environmental and outdoor organizations in attendance.
- It appears that someone from the North Alabama Group of the Sierra Club will be undergoing the necessary certifications to provide outings leadership training to those interested in becoming certified to organize outings or becoming recertified to organize outings. Outings has been going well in that we have been have 4 or 5 Sierra Club outings per month. The issue is that only a small handful of the dozen or more outings leaders are actually leading events.
New Business
- There was a brief discussion of booking the Swan Cabin near Robbinsville, North Carolina for a group outing to watch the solar eclipse in August. The annual Locust Fork paddling trip in partnership with the Friends of Locust Fork will be held on April 29th. Lucina will message outings leaders about posting events for March.
- There was an explanation of Inspiring Connections Outdoors (formerly known as Inner City Outings) when an attendee asked how to get kids in their neighborhood involved.
Calendar
- March 9th - Cahaba Riverkeeper at the Birmingham Zoo Adam will be in contact with the organization for the meeting.
- April 13th - Darryl Patton will do an herbal medicine/native plant walk at Ruffner Meeting time will be at 6:00p at the Back Porch and business meeting will be after the walk with Patton. Patton will be paid an honorarium of $75.00
- Beyond these two dates, things became less clear. Without saying who said what there was discussion on a Beyond Coal program on May 11th and a Green Energy Program from a member of Friends of the Locust Fork on June 8th. There was discussion of combining these two groups into one big meeting and it was also suggested that asking these two groups to work together would not be honoring their time.
- July or August were both offered up as good times to not hold a meeting for the group.
- Rob Burton was tasked with coming up with a preliminary budget for a diversity training program this summer in partnership with Zac Henson of Cooperative New School for Urban Studies and Environmental Justice featuring a PhD. candidate from the University of California-Berkeley. We hope to piggyback on an event the Alabama Chapter is doing in late July. Further discussion will determine whether this event will be held instead of our July and August meetings.
- The meeting was adjourned at 7:52p in a motion made by Brandon Crawford Smith and seconded by Chris Krato.
