Carol Adams-Davis My conservation philosophy agrees with the Sierra Club’s Statement of Purpose, Vision, and Policies. I believe our members are our most important asset and that Alabama Sierra Club should continue to organize people with shared environmental concerns into a powerful and effective force for protecting our local as well as our global natural environment. I recognize that Alabama Sierra Club should continue to:
Be supportive to new & potential members so that they develop a productive relationship with the Club.
Facilitate and appreciate each member involvement in the organization at the level the member desires.
Provide Club members with educational programs, field trips, materials, information, expertise and other resources that will strengthen their relationship with the Sierra Club and other worthwhile missions.
Carol has worked on Sierra Club’s Gulf Crisis Leadership Team for the last 10 years on post BP Oil Crisis issues regarding Natural Resource Damage Assessment, the Restore Act, and Coastal and Marine Restoration Projects. She has been the Sierra Club liaison to Earth Day Mobile Bay since its beginning in 2008. Carol is currently working on Climate Change Crisis, Environmental Justice, Air Quality, Plastic Pollution and PFAS, Alabama Water Management Plan, Coastal Conservation and Dredging Practices throughout the state, Coal Ash in Alabama, Clean Energy and Beyond Fossil Fuel, Storm Water Management, Protecting Southern Forests from expanding wood-pellet industries, Sustainable Agriculture., and more.
Carol is Secretary, Legislative Chair, and Conservation Chair of Sierra Club Alabama Chapter, and Vice Chair and Program Chairman for Sierra Club Mobile Bay Group.
Nancy Muse Born an Army brat in Mineral Wells,Texas, I spent my early childhood in Europe, lived in Virginia and later moved to Florence Alabama, where I grew up, raised my children and now live. I obtained a BA in Fine Art from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia (1977), N-12 Visual Art Education certification fromThe University of North Alabama, Florence, Alabama (1988) and retired as a public school, visual arts teacher in 2018. I have spent four decades in various environmental organizations as a member and board member, including serving for 13 years as President of a local 501 (C) 3, Shoals Earth Month. As an individual, I have actively advocated for various environmental causes such as Smart Growth development, renewable energy, and have attended numerous public input meetings and workshops including: TVA land use, coal ash, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant presentations, TVA Board of Director meetings, TVA GreenPower Switch/Generation Providers and other City, County and non-profit meetings concerning local environmental issues.
In my community, I have organized environmental education symposia, festivals and rallies, and have protested against numerous polluting industries. I was an active proponent of US Congressman, Ronnie Flippo’s Sipsey Wilderness Expansion bill in the mid 1980s as well as an organizer of the resistance to tar sand mining and nuclear plant construction in the North Alabama area. I have served on the Sierra Club Alabama Chapter ExCom since January, 2017 and in September, recently attended the Sierra Club Council of Club Leaders virtual meeting as an alternate delegate, am on the Legislative Committee and am serving as the Chair of the Political Committee. My love of the natural world began when, as a child, I relished roaming the forests and fields with my grandfather.
Childhood trips to the Bankhead, experiencing the creeks and falls were euphoric. Out-west, family camping trips to our great National Parks made an impression on me of the importance of protecting our wild, scenic, public lands. Fighting to preserve NEPA, the EPA and hard-earned, environmental protection legislation for a healthy Planet and a rich, biodiverse future for all creatures, is my passion.
Melissa Stewart Melissa Stewart is an environmental engineer in Huntsville, AL. She enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and camping, and majored in Environmental Engineer Sciences in college because she wanted to help protect our precious planet.
Melissa is a member of the North Alabama Sierra Club group and is passionate about community outreach, education, and communication about the urgent issues of climate change and environmental justice. She has 2 kids and spends many weekends hiking with them in the Land Trust of North Alabama.
Joi Travis Joi currently serves as the Chair for the Alabama Sierra Club Executive Committee. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Joi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Alabama State University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Auburn University in Montgomery, AL. Joi obtained a J.D. from the Birmingham School of Law, where she currently serves as the President of the Board for the Birmingham School of Law Foundation. Joi is a licensed Attorney for the State of Alabama and owns Travis Law, LLC. Areas of practice include: Family Law, Probate, and Personal Injury. Joi is a lifelong and passionate public servant. Over her career, Joi has volunteered with numerous organizations such as: The NAACP, Rock The Vote, ACLU, The Girl Scouts of America, Upward Bound, The National Pan-Hellenic Council, The League of Women Voters, Future Business Leaders of America, and the Urban League. Joi loves nature and enjoys walking trails and other opportunities to be outdoors. She is passionate about eliminating environmental pollution and is committed to advocating for all Alabamians to have the same access to clean air, clean water and clean energy.
Joi believes the role of an effective Executive Committee member requires dedicated leadership and sacrifice. Joi is hard working and continues to make Sierra Cub a priority by continuously recruiting members and educating about the organization at every opportunity.
