Uniontown, AL’s sewage sprayfield is now discharging wastewater via an unpermitted pipe into Freetown Creek with permission by ADEM and a local judge. ADEM’s permit only allows a discharge to groundwater at the sprayfield, yet Uniontown has illegally discharged improperly treated sewage to this and other area creeks for decades. Lacking proper enforcement by ADEM and leadership from Uniontown’s elected officials, we are partnered with Black Belt Citizens to advocate for proper public notification, adequate enforcement, and a lasting solution to this longstanding problem. The wastewater volume overload is largely due to Paul Bryant, Jr.’s Harvest Select Catfish processing plant taking advantage of this small town by discharging more wastewater into their lagoon than can be handled.
