Busy Week, But No Movement on Plastic Bag Bills

The legislature tackled a handful of controversial bills this week, including a proposed lottery and the legalization of medical marijuana. While legislators worked on these hot-button issues, no one wanted to touch SB 244/HB 346, the bills to prohibit cities from banning plastic bags. This is good news for us and the municipalities who have lobbied against the bills.

Two new bills were introduced that would make a positive impact on Alabama’s land and water. Rep. Neil Rafferty (D-Birmingham) introduced the Water Conservation & Security Act, House Bill 476, which would give the state the necessary authority to protect our waterways and regulate water usage during a drought. The bill is currently in the House State Government Committee.

Here's a bit of background on the bill.
