A Disrupted System: Alabama's Disappearing Barrier Island

As Alabama's only barrier island, Dauphin Island is essential for protecting the coastal mainland from waves and storm activity and in supporting an important and diverse ecosystem. After decades of poor dredging and maintenance practices of the Mobile Harbor Ship Channel, the island has been left in critical danger. If a solution cannot be found, the erosion of Dauphin Island will continue at an accelerated rate with unfortunate consequences. With the hope of finding a turning point, passionate locals speak to the environmental, economic, and cultural threats that are mounting, and call for action to save Alabama's coast.
