The Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign has opened an office in Montgomery, housing the Club’s only national-level staffer based in Alabama. Stephen Stetson, a senior campaign rep for the Beyond Coal Campaign, is focusing his attention on clean energy, and has been assigned to help one of the nation’s largest utilities shift away from dirty and polluting coal as a source of power generation.
“I’m really just so proud to have a physical space here in Alabama,” Stetson said. “My job requires me to cover Mississippi and Georgia too, but I already was living in Montgomery and figured that it was the midpoint between my two other states. So I’m excited that we’ll now have a physical location in close proximity to the policymaking structure that is in charge of protecting Alabama’s environment.”
The new office, which opened at the end of 2017, is on Dexter Avenue in the Judicial Building owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama.
“It’s cool that our office is across the street from Dr. King’s church on Dexter Avenue,” Stetson said. “It’s a good reminder every day coming to work of the great possibilities for change that can come from this place.”
