Forever Wild Spotlight: Old Cahawba Prairie (from Conservation Alabama).
Alabama's first permanent state capital, Cahawba, is now an archaeological park where visitors can see how early Alabamians lived and worked. Adjacent to this site is Forever Wild's Old Cahawba Prairie Tract. More than 4,500 acres of protected land in Dallas County preserve this unique prairie habitat and offer recreation opportunities in Alabama's Black Belt region.
Eleven miles of trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders run through the tract. Hunting is allowed on the property, and Old Cahawba Prairie is a stop on the Black Belt Birding Trail. Forever Wild has implemented a new program called Project Habitat Watch, which uses photos taken by visitors to chart the landscape changes on several Forever Wild properties. Old Cahawba Archaeological Park and the Old Cahawba Prairie Tract are hubs for tourism in the Black Belt, and help showcase an important part of our state's history and natural resources.
