NUCLEAR NO MORE: Pacific Gas and Electric released a proposal to close California’s last operating nuclear plant—the Diablo Canyon Power Plant—by 2025. The company plans to compensate for output losses by investing in renewable energy.

FRACK NO: The German government announced Tuesday that it plans to ban fracking for shale gas in the country indefinitely, due to concerns about drinking water contamination. However, some test drilling will still be allowed.

OLYMPIC JAGUAR KILLED: A jaguar that had been chained and sedated at Monday’s Olympic torch-lighting ceremony in Manaus, Brazil, was shot dead by a soldier after she escaped her handlers. The jaguar is the official mascot of Brazil’s Olympic team.

SYSCO GOES CAGE-FREE: The world’s largest food supplier, Sysco Corporation, has committed to using 100 percent cage-free eggs in its entire U.S. supply chain by 2026. The company, which made $48.7 billion in sales last year, will be the first of its kind to go cage-free.

CALIFORNIA BURNING: Hundreds of Los Angeles residents were evacuated on Monday as two wildfires spanning more than 5,000 acres of canyonlands threatened homes near the Angeles National Forest.
