The Department of Energy has denied a second request from the developers of the proposed Lake Charles LNG export facility to extend their deadline for beginning to ship gas abroad, likely spelling the end for the controversial methane gas project. DOE also issued a policy statement, to be published in the federal register, stating that the department will be more stringent with extension requests going forward.

Annapolis, Maryland — Today, environmental, business, and community groups celebrated as Governor Wes Moore signed the Clean Trucks Act of 2023 (HB 230/SB 224) that passed the General Assembly into law. Sponsored by President Pro Tem Malcolm Augustine and Delegate Sara Love, the legislation requires the Maryland Department of Environment to adopt a regulation known as the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule by the end of this year.

ANCHORAGE, AK — A one-sentence U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling today allows ConocoPhillips to continue on-the-ground mining and road building on the Willow oil and gas project while lawsuits challenging its legality make their way through court. The decision denies an emergency motion requested on April 5 by law firm Trustees for Alaska on behalf of Sovereign Iñupiat for a Living Arctic and five allied groups as part of lawsuit challenging the approval of Willow.

Today, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission again acted as a rubber stamp for the fossil fuel industry in issuing a 3:1 approval of two liquified gas (LNG) export terminals, Texas LNG, Rio Grande LNG and the associated Rio Bravo Pipeline, despite not adequately evaluating the environmental impacts of the projects and amidst widespread community and environmental justice concerns. Commissioner Clements dissented from these orders stating that the “commission has created an incomplete and inadequate record.” Sierra Club will seek a rehearing of these approvals.
