democracy

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, as the country marks the one-year anniversary of the violent attack on the US Capitol, the Sierra Club again calls on the Senate to protect and strengthen our democracy by passing the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA), and the Protect Our Democracy Act. These critical federal laws will preempt the hundreds of bad state bills that could otherwise keep millions of people from voting in upcoming elections, put in place more checks and balances, prevent presidential abuse of power as we saw under the Trump administration, and prevent future attempts to undermine and attack our elections.

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Today, Senate Republicans filibustered a procedural vote to open debate on critical voting rights legislation for the fourth time this year. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) would restore and expand many of the protections in the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The consequences of delaying or blocking the VRAA have become increasingly evident.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Senate Republicans filibustered a procedural vote on critical voting rights legislation for the third time this year. WASHINGTON D.C.--  Today, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) was introduced in the U.S. Senate.  Back in August, the bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Terri Sewell and passed by a vote of 219-212. The passing of the VRAA in the House was imperative, as it would complement the Freedom to Vote Act and bolster the bipartisan Voting Rights Act of 1965. It would expand and broaden Section 2, which has been weakened by two Supreme Court decisions.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Late last night, a narrowly divided Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ignored its precedent and undermined the Constitutional rights of millions of people by declining to block Texas’ abortion ban (S.B. 8). S.B. 8, which took effect Tuesday, bans abortion care after six weeks of pregnancy, making it all but impossible for millions of Texans to receive essential healthcare. S.B. 8 is the most restrictive abortion law in the nation and it also incentivizes private individuals to file lawsuits against anyone they believe is either providing abortion care or assisting someone in accessing an abortion.
