BOISE, ID -- As part of a settlement deal released yesterday, Idaho Power announced its intention to close the two units at Nevada’s North Valmy Generating Station several years ahead of schedule. Idaho Power plans to close Unit 1 in 2019 and Unit 2 in 2025. Idaho Power’s current schedule depreciates Units 1 and 2 in 2031 and 2035, respectively.
Sierra Club Michigan Chapter today called on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to maintain current fuel economy standards that protect our air, land and Great Lakes. Under the Trump Administration, the EPA is reconsidering previously finalized clean cars standards that reduce tailpipe carbon pollution, improve fuel economy, and combat climate change.
Late yesterday, President Trump announced his nomination of Bill Wehrum, a lobbyist and former George W. Bush-era EPA official, to lead the EPA's air and radiation office. Wehrum was nominated for this position once before, in 2006, and rejected by the Senate.
An economic analysis released today by Synapse Energy Economics found that CPS Energy has likely been losing money by operating its outdated Spruce 1 and Spruce 2 coal-burning units at the Calaveras power plant over the past several years and would likely continue to do so into the future.
