Washington, DC — Today, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Ruben Gallego in the race to be the next United States Senator from Arizona, citing Gallego’s record and commitment to climate issues and advancing environmental justice.

"We are at a pivotal moment in the fight to address climate change, and we are confident that Ruben Gallego will continue to work hard to protect Arizona’s families’ health, their access to clean air and water, and help build a clean energy economy that works for everyone,” said Rebecca Hinton, Arizona Political Committee Member for the Sierra Club.

As the Inflation Reduction Act – the largest investment in clean energy and climate action ever – continues to be implemented, it is more important than ever to elect champions like Ruben Gallego who will prioritize our communities and our future. Gallego voted and advocated for this historic law to be passed, which has already spurred more than $10 billion in economic investment in Arizona, including more than 14,000 clean energy jobs.

"I'm deeply concerned about Arizona's future and want to do all I can to preserve and protect our state's natural beauty,” said Gallego. “Because of our shared commitment to Arizona's environmental and water future, I'm honored to have earned the Sierra Club's endorsement. Together we will win this race and redouble our efforts to preserve a future where our children and their children can enjoy the wonders of places like the Grand Canyon and have access to clean air, water, and a thriving planet.”

During his time in the House of Representatives, Congressman Gallego has been instrumental in working to preserve public lands and protect the environment.

“Arizona is an amazingly beautiful and diverse state – from the Grand Canyon to the San Pedro River and from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to the KOFA National Wildlife Refuge. We are so lucky to have public lands and waters and the various plant, animal, and human communities they support,” said Sandy Bahr, Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter Director. “Unfortunately, however, these lands and waters are threatened by the actions of an out-of-touch Congress that seeks to weaken or fails to act to ensure their protection and to safeguard them from the threats of climate change. That is why we need champions like Ruben Gallego in the Senate who understand and are ready to meet these challenges and do all they can to protect our home.”

Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will also lend its volunteer strength to Gallego’s campaign.
