WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Early this morning, Representative Elijah Cummings passed away. Cummings represented Maryland's 7th Congressional District since 1996 and most recently served as the chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and as a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"A tireless advocate for our democracy, civil and human rights, and clean air, clean water and healthy communities, Representative Elijah Cummings put the country and his district first. Cummings was a voice for the voiceless, seeking to lift people up while ensuring the protection and preservation of our democratic values and norms. The Sierra Club sends our condolences to Cummings’ family, friends, and the people of Maryland’s 7th district.”
