Sierra Club Wisconsin Releases Scorecard and First Round of Endorsements
MADISON- Today, the Sierra Club Wisconsin Chapter released its 2023-24 Legislative Scorecard. The scorecard analyzes the most important environmental votes taken by the legislature. Along with the Scorecard release, the Sierra Club released its first round of endorsements in the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly.
“The last legislative session was marked by inaction and attacks on democracy, but Governor Evers took a strong stand, using his veto power to protect Wisconsin’s environment and ensure a budget focused on environmental justice. We want to thank Governor Evers and the legislative champions who recognize that with climate change and water contamination threatening our state, we cannot afford more political delays—we must act now to safeguard our water, wildlife, and future," said Elizabeth Ward, Sierra Club Wisconsin Director.
The 40 State lawmakers who scored a perfect 100% pro-environment voting record have been named Sierra Club 2024 Environmental Champion for their demonstrated commitment to preserving Wisconsin’s environment. The names of the Environmental Champions are listed in bold in the list of endorsed candidates and the rest can be found on Page 15 of the scorecard.
For Sierra Club endorsements, incumbent officials were judged based on their overall environmental voting record, public statements and activities while in office. Challengers were measured by their responses to questionnaires and interviews, environmental platforms, public service, and public statements.
“Electing strong independent environmental leaders who will work hard for Wisconsin’s environment is a priority for the Club. We will do everything we can to help pro-environment candidates win,” explained Dave Blouin, Sierra Club Wisconsin Political Chair, as the announced endorsements were made. The full list of endorsements can be read below.
Previously, the Sierra Club had endorsed Kamala Harris for President and Tammy Baldwin for Senate, and Peter Barca, Mark Pocan, Gwen Moore, Kyle Kilbourn, and Kristen Lyerly for the United States Congress.
