Connor Kish (VA Chapter Executive Director) and Bob Shippee (VA Chapter Legislative Chair) talked on 2/21/2024 about how the 2024 VA General Assembly was going. Generally speaking, as of the time of this discussion, the effort to defeat “bad bills” (bills that are considered bad for the environment) had been mostly successful. However, some were still under consideration, particularly two “nuclear” bills that put rate payers on the hook to pay for them, while holding little chance of ever generating any energy. The presenters also talked about some environmentally-friendly VA bills working their way through the system. These bills sometimes get watered down as part of the political process. Unfortunately, their ultimate fate is uncertain because the current governor generally sides with big business rather than the environment (and the rest of us). Also, the state budget looks to be very tight this year.
