Park Ranger Aaron Firth spoke to the Sierra Club York River Group on November 16, 2022 about the Fort Monroe National Monument, which has been a part of our National Park System since 2011. There is so much history surrounding Fort Monroe! The park service is working assiduously to develop plans to preserve and protect this landmark, while also providing access, including many educational programs, for the visiting public.
Because of Fort Monroe’s importance to our area, the Sierra Club York River Group has been focused on preserving and protecting it for many years, long before it was designated as a National Monument. We continue to have special programs like this about the park, to monitor the progress of its preservation.
For anyone who has not visited there yet, the Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center is a great place to start to get oriented. The Center is is a collaboration between the Fort Monroe Authority, the National Park Service, and the city of Hampton. It provides interpretive exhibits, research, and archival resources.
In his talk, Ranger Aaron provided many interesting details regarding the inner workings and future plans for Fort Monroe.
