While the world acts on climate, Virginia’s House Leadership is determined to block all efforts to cut carbon pollution.
Just four months ago in Paris, the nations of the world committed to taking concrete steps to address the climate crisis. For the first time in history, the global community agreed to action that will prevent the worst consequences of climate change and agreed to a global pact at COP21.
It was hailed as a historic turning point, the moment when the deniers, the junk science and Big Coal, Oil and Gas couldn’t stop us any longer. The international climate movement delivered a historic agreement and built undeniable momentum toward a just society that is powered by clean energy.
But now, four politicians in the Virginia House of Delegates are determined to stop our progress.
Speaker Bill Howell (R-Stafford), Majority Leader Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights), Republican Caucus Chairman Tim Hugo (R-Manassas), and Majority Whip Jackson Miller (R-Manassas) want to delay, obstruct and derail action on climate change. The House Leadership has added poisonous language to the state budget to stop the Clean Power Plan momentum already underway in Virginia.
With your help, we are going to hold these politicians accountable. We must show them that the global climate movement can’t be stopped with a simple budget item. Blocking action on climate change just won’t be that easy!
The politicians are coming back to Virginia’s Capitol this week to vote on budget matters and review the Governor’s vetoes. And when they do, Speaker Howell and Delegates Cox, Hugo and Miller will be hearing us loud and clear: Virginians demand action, because the climate crisis won’t wait for your petty politics!
