Dear Friend,
As we wrap up the first week of May we'd like to highlight some exciting things coming up and reflect on some past ones as well. Interested in being an outings leader? Meet up with other letters from the past, present, and future this weekend! Learn about subsidence in Windsor Park, hear about witnessing history, and an amazing volunteer cleanup. Nevada Rail Coalition is looking for an Intern, learn about why we announce our pronouns when meeting new people, connecting to our Las Vegas Community Centers, and our Earth Day with Boys and Girls Club recap. This all happens thanks to our amazing volunteers, and through support from our members and donors. Thank you all for everything you do. We couldn't do it without you!

Mending a Broken Community:
SB450 & Environmental Justice for Windsor Park
Requesting nearly $30 million dollars to mend a broken redlined community in North Las Vegas is a strong ask, but that’s exactly what State Senator Dina Neal did as she introduced compelling evidence from public ledgers, official documents, and news articles chronicling Windsor Park's powerful and slow moving environmental disaster. At the legislative hearing on April 27, senators heard testimonies from misled residents who recently purchased homes only to discover they could not insure, resell, or even repair their properties. Witnessing History: Avi Kwa Ami and Castner Range Become National Monuments
Our own Southern Nevada Group Vice-Chair, Misty Haji-Sheikh, shares her excitement of receiving an invitation from the White House to attend the Conservation in Action Summit in Washington, DC, and her experience (with literally an almost front-row seat) witnessing history. The news was reporting that President Biden would be dedicating Avi Kwa Ame as a new National Monument. Misty had worked on Avi Kwa Ame with the Sierra Club and was beyond excited to go to the Summit. Read more... |

LVICO Celebrates Earth Day
LVICO celebrated Earth Day 2023 with the Boys and Girls club at Lied Memorial. Volunteers Cynthia and Barbara met with three groups of children, ages six through 11, approximately 50-60 youth, in total. Our lively discussions began with what the kids thought made up the earth. A "Life is Good" soccer ball was tossed from child to child as they shared their thoughts with excitement once they received the "talking" ball. Their answers ranged from lakes and rivers to trees and flowers, naming their favorite animals and even the fast food places they enjoyed. Read more... |
