Communication Award 2020
Honoring the best use of communications (either print or electronic) by a Sierra Club group, chapter or other entity to further the Club's mission, this prize is presented by the national organization based in Oakland, CA. Up to two may be awarded annually. This year, 2020, one award was given to the Toiyabe Chapter, for the Southern Nevada Group's Earth Day 50 Celebration. A big thank you goes out to the dozens of individuals and 13 promotional parties who helped make the project and this very special recognition possible. To all the winners in the Earth Day 50 Art & Essay Contest sponsored by the Sierra Club. In pictures and in words, Clark County residents from age 2 to 85 showed us “What Earth Day Means to Me” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22, 2020. The top Youth and Adult essays were published in the Las Vegas Sun (HERE) and excerpts from others can be read online (HERE). Our advertisement in the 4/23 edition of Las Vegas Weekly displays the winning artwork (HERE). Links to all the winners are featured in blue below. Prize winners also received certificates of excellence, while finalists were awarded certificates of recognition. Entries cited by one or more judges as Honorable Mentions were sent certificates of achievement, and all other entrants were given personalized certificates of merit for their participation. A huge thank you goes out to our contest judges: Jim Boone and Liz LaRue of BirdAndHike.com, non-fiction author Gail Collins-Ranadive, philanthropist and entrepreneur Johnny Lincoln, Ph.D. of Lincoln Dynamic Foundation, and former Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, as well as native Nevadan artist Montana Black, multimedia artist Mike Davies of Slo-Motion Arts, Meow Wolf Community Outreach Associate Fawn Douglas, and author Taj Ainlay, Chair of the Sierra Club Southern Nevada Group. We also owe a tip of the hat to all the promotional parties, who helped make the contest possible.
