As we near the halfway point of 2023, there is a lot of new and exciting information to share with you. To begin, meet our new Chapter Chair, Vinny Spotleson! The winter snow melt off is some welcome positive news for our local lakes. Our Conservation and Public Lands Committee and Equity Inclusion, and Justice Committee are both volunteer led and kicking into high gear. Learn all of the ways you can get involved as a volunteer or by signing up to join us on an event or outing. However you're involvement, we couldn't do this work without the support from volunteers, members, supporters, and donors. Thank you!

At a recent meeting of the Toiyabe Chapter Executive Committee (ExCom), Vinny Spotleson was selected as our new volunteer Chair. We thank our past Chair Tina Davis for her service, and are excited that she will continue serving on our ExCom. This past winter of 2022-2023 has been a phenomenal snow year in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Snowfall is 300-percent of normal. The East and West Forks of the Walker River, which begin in the icy, sawtooth Sierra peaks and flow East to Walker Lake, are swollen with runoff. During a typical year, much of the Walker River water is intercepted by upstream irrigators and never reaches the lake. Read more... |

Two times each year, the Great Basin Group offers practical First Aid training with the focus on what might be needed on outdoor trips. These trainings are offered at no cost to Outings Leaders and is supported through the $1 donation program. The majority of the first aid training is learned through practicing a variety of scenarios including learning how to diagnose and treat minor to major incidences that could happen in the backcountry. Washoe Meadows Wildflower Hike

The Tahoe Area Group in conjunction with the Sierra State Parks Foundation sponsored a wildflower hike in Washoe Meadows State Park on June 10th . Lisa Berry, an instructor at Lake Tahoe Community College led the hike around the undeveloped park. Slaughterhouse Canyon / Skunk Harbor Day Hike

8:00am - 1:00pm
We'll hike from the Skunk Harbor trailhead on Highway 28 through Slaugherhouse Canyon and over the ridge to Skunk Harbor on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. Elevation gain is about 700'. Highlights will include flowers, birds, and the history of logging, railroads, and wilderness preservation in the Tahoe basin. Registration and more information... |
