Dear Friend,
It's the last full week of May and we're in the final stretch of the 2023 Nevada legislative process. Thank you so much to all of you that volunteered your time to help us get the word out and weigh in (whether in support or opposition) on potential bills. While we're at it, let's take this opportunity to speak up to BLM and let them know that it's time to make conservation a priority on the public lands they manage. Join us for some upcoming outings and events, and learn more about the implicit bias we all carry, and how to check it. We continue to monitor the Tahoe Keys Weeds situation, and hear about a local cleanup that led to a classic silent film stars ranch. Thanks to all of you for all you do, whether through membership, donations, or volunteering your time. We couldn't do all of this without you.

The 2023 Legislative Session is quickly coming to a close, and the Legislative Committee is expecting some victories and some defeats. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the legislature passes and the governor signs at least some of our high and medium priority bills. We will do a full update after the end of the session. |

EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND JUSTICE
What is Implicit Bias?
In the Outings world of the Sierra Club, we discuss the concept of implicit bias specifically in relation to how it affects Outings Leaders’ attitudes towards outing participants. Many of our Sierra Club outings require specific skills and abilities, and it is important to impartially evaluate every participant to ensure that they are qualified and properly prepared for the event. But in reality, implicit bias affects all that we do in life, be it in our work, play or even how we react and interact with others in our organization. Read more... |

SOUTHERN NEVADA GROUP
Walking Box Ranch, Former Hollywood Celebrities' Home, Gets a Makeover!
Nestled in robust Joshua tree groves just about seven miles west of Searchlight, Nevada, lies Walking Box Ranch. Silent movie screen idol Clara Bow, and actor husband, Rex Bell, had retired from the celluloid glitz and glamor of Hollywood to live blissfully on their original vast working cattle ranch. On Saturday, May 6th, our group of volunteers and members of the Friends of Walking Box Ranch, arrived to clean up and landscape around the house. Little did we know, we were in for a treat! TAHOE AREA GROUP
Keeping an Eye on the Tahoe Keys Weeds Project
We requested and received a copy of the Annual Report on the first year of herbicide and testing. There will be a presentation to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's Governing Board in May. Our lawsuit against Lahontan Water Board continues and we're expecting the full Administrative Record shortly. The next two years (2023 and 2024) of the "Control Methods Test" will involve non-chemical methods for weed control, though we are concerned about the extent of testing now that the herbicides have been used. We will continue to monitor and report on the project. |
