Dear Friend,
It's official, HAPPY SPRING! Here in Nevada, we're about half way through our legislative process and are optimistic of bills we've supported, which have passed the first committee votes, moving forward. It's Earth Month and we have celebrations across our Chapter, a personal reflection of witnessing history, and action for public lands. We're seeking volunteers for Nevada Rail Coalition, Inspiring Connections Outdoors, and we've launched Outings and Events throughout the region. And those are just the highlights! Of course, all of this work is only possible with our amazing volunteers, volunteer leaders, members, and supporters. Thank you, as always, for all that you do.

Our own Southern Nevada Group Vice-Chair, Misty Haji-Sheikh, shares her excitement of receiving an invitation from the White House to attend the Conservation in Action Summit in Washington, DC, and her experience (with literally an almost front-row seat) witnessing history. The news was reporting that President Biden would be dedicating Avi Kwa Ame as a new National Monument. Misty had worked on Avi Kwa Ame with the Sierra Club and was beyond excited to go to the Summit. Read more... |

You may have attended a meeting in which you were asked for your pronoun(s) and wondered why. This allows each person to identify as they see themselves. How they see themselves may be different than how they look. You may choose to identify with the pronoun(s) of your choice or choose not to identify with a pronoun. Each person can also change their pronouns if they choose. You may also choose not to identify with any pronouns. Read more... |

As the largest land management agency in the country, the Bureau of Land Management oversees the management and public enjoyment of 245 million acres of lands and waters across the United States. These lands are critical to wildlife, water, outdoor recreation, and climate resiliency–but for too long, the agency has prioritized resource extraction, like drilling and mining, over conservation in its management decisions. Virtual Presentation

TAHOE AREA GROUP
Our Comment Letter on the Tahoe Regional Trails Strategy
|
|
We are concerned about the potential for environmental impacts from the proposed near-term 11% increase in trail miles in the Basin combined with further unspecified increases in the next 20 years. The increase in trails will bring an increase in numbers of people to the Basin at a time when it is already at maximum carrying capacity and Lake Tahoe’s water quality is suffering because of it. |
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has been increasing density, coverage, and height (by lessening restrictions on each) in “Town Centers” to allow for “affordable housing.” However, what is being approved is not affordable; luxury condominiums are being allowed instead. Several groups, including Tahoe Area Group, are raising concerns about TRPA not performing its duty under the Bi-State Compact to protect the environment of Lake Tahoe, and are instead selling off Tahoe to the highest bidder.
