Dear Friend,
As we wrap up another year (how did it go by so fast?) please consider a year-end contribution so we can continue the work outlined below and more into 2023. Right now, we're looking for volunteers across Nevada to train as leaders and help people learn to love the outdoors, asking for help to make that final push for Avi Kwa Ame to be a national monument, supporting rail expansion as clean transportation, fighting to keep Lake Tahoe pristine, and keeping an eye on exploratory drilling projects. Sierra Club is the largest grassroots-led environmental organization in the country, and here at the Toiyabe Chapter we know we couldn't do it without you!

Reflecting on Victories With an Eye on Challenges Ahead
We at the Toiyabe Chapter show up every single day to protect our region's future. We fight to protect our desert lands with their sagebrush valleys and red rock formations, our snow capped mountains, our lakes, rivers, and forests, and the hundreds of plants and animal species found nowhere else in the world. Together, we fight for our communities, explore the places we love, and speak truth to power. And we couldn't do it without your support and contributions. [ Read more...] |

CLEAN TRANSPORTATION FOR ALL
Keeping an Eye on Rail Expansion in Nevada
The Federal Railroad Administration is currently conducting a long-distance service study that was mandated by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. The Nevada Rail Coalition (NRC) and the Toiyabe Chapter Transportation Committee encourage you to visit the webpage, read a bit about the purpose of the study, and sign up for updates. This study will be an important piece of implementing the NRC’s passenger rail expansion goals in Nevada. The expansion of these priority passenger rail improvements will rely on Amtrak and the results of this study to be successful. [ Read more...] |

SOUTHERN NEVADA GROUP
Stewards of our Public Lands
This Land belongs to You and Me
At a time when development is endangering Nevada’s natural places, the Sierra Club’s Southern Nevada Group is stepping up its stewardship of public lands. Volunteers participated in two events, the Coyote Springs cleanup, as well as the colorfully headlined, “The Great Unconformity Cleanup,” respectively. To keep our public lands thriving, we partnered with the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, Go Mt. Charleston, and Get Outdoors Nevada. [ Read more...]

TAHOE AREA GROUP
Concerns on the Placer County Proposed Amendment to the Tahoe Basin Area Plan
Recently the Sierra Club Tahoe Area Group submitted a letter of concern to Placer County regarding proposed amendments to the Lake Tahoe Basin Area plan. Areas of concern include increased density, affordable housing, lake water quality, evacuation safety, parking, and much more. These amendments seem to be driven by (1) an economic study done in 2019 and (2) the California legislature enacting laws making it easier for development to occur. [ Read more...] |

Update on Eastern Sierra Exploratory Drilling Projects
Bald Peak, Nevada: We are saddened to share that the USDA Forest Service, Bridgeport Ranger District, has approved the Bald Peak Mineral Exploration Project for 11 drill sites . This is in a remote part of the Bodie Hills and will be accessed solely by helicopter. Paramount Nevada's stock has also dropped from a 2022 high of $1.10/share to $0.37/share on November 11, 2022. |
Sawtooth Ridge at Aurora, Nevada: A decision memo is expected in January to allow drilling at 16 locations. 13 are in a pinyon woodland and three are in sagebrush clearings. This project was first proposed as a categorical exclusion under NEPA, but we have to wait until the decision memo is released to know if that will still be the case. Hundreds of mature, healthy pinyon trees will need to be removed. |

Spring Peak/Aurora Peak, Nevada: Headwater Gold has stopped drilling for the winter. They've drilled at at least six of the 23 approved drill sites. Headwater Gold's website says they "found significant gold values" in four of the five drill holes they drilled last summer. Their stock has gone up from $0.25/share at the the start of 2022 to $0.315 on November 14, 2022. They have also been staking more claims in the area. This is one to watch carefully.
