Make Your Voice Heard This Legislative Session!
|
|
The Toiyabe Chapter’s Legislative Committee is looking for volunteers to join our efforts for the upcoming 2023 legislative session. Whether you are a complete beginner (what is a BDR?!) or a seasoned testifier, we need your help! On top of our meetings, we are busy tracking bills, providing testimony at committee hearings, attending lobbying days, and meeting with legislators about our priority issues. We also do our best to engage our entire Toiyabe Chapter membership with our work. This includes developing petitions, conducting hustle texting campaigns to raise awareness about a bill, and sending out communications materials to educate them on our legislative priorities. Toiyabe Southern NV Group (SNG) Executive Committee member and Executive Director of Nevada Plants - Lisa Ortega, or as we sometimes call her - Tree Lady, noticed that trees along freeway onramps were dying or had died, and not replaced. She also noted that there needs to be more trees along our freeways to alleviate pollution for people who live nearby, to help mitigate urban heat island effect, and trees take in carbon dioxide (CO2) which curbs the impacts of climate change. One of the sites visited by Secretary Haaland, Rep. Susie Lee, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Laura Daniels-Davis, and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada State Director Jon Raby, was Spirit Mountain, which is called Avi Kwa Ame by the Mojave Tribe.
